Welcome to the blog! This space is mostly going to be about what I’m listening to. Back in college I got to study with saxophonist John Ellis for a year and would always show up to my lesson asking if he had heard such and such a record. One time he said, “Damn Jenner, you’re a sidesjunkie!” True. My collection has well over 6300 lps and cds at this point. I am a true believer in physical media and don’t do Spotify, etc.
So I’m gonna use this space to talk A LOT about records. Probably a lot about artists I don’t think receive the recognition they deserve, cats like Billy Drewes, Ted Brown, Frank Kimbrough, etc. Cats I’m obsessed with like Lee Konitz, Hank Mobley, Rich Perry, Joe Henderson, Sonny Stitt, the list goes on and on. Hopefully turn you onto some New Orleans artists you aren’t hip to.
I will post transcriptions, maybe some lead sheets, pedagogical thoughts, etc. Who knows? Basically I’m just going to write about the music I love.
Hope you’ll stick around and check out the blog! Drop a comment or send an email with your thoughts, suggestions, recommendations—I’d love to hear from you!
Happy Listening!
Michael
